Medical Science I

8083-8084 Medical Science I Grades 9 10 1 credit
This course exposes students to the variety of opportunities available within the health-care industry such as nursing, therapy, dental care, administrative service and lab technology. This course provides experiences in the Health Science Education pathway, along with information and knowledge related to the health care industry as a whole. This course in a prerequisite for all other courses in the Health Science Pathway.

 

Human Body Systems

3743-3744 Human Body Systems (Med Sci II) Grades 11 12 1 credit
Prerequisites: Biology and Chemistry (concurrent enrollment in Chemistry allowed; see p. 21). Students in this course study the technical names for many body structures and how the various systems in the body function. Homework is minimal. Lab activities including working with models and specimens take up the majority of class time. This course, which is open to anyone wanting to know more about the human body, provides a good foundation for students interested in pursuing careers in the various medical technologies or non-technical nursing fields.

 

Sports Medicine

80871-80872 Sports Medicine Grades 11 12 1 credit
This course will expand knowledge of the skeletomuscular system with emphasis on improving athletic performance and injuries. Sports related neuropathology and nutrition will be major topics. Significant class time will be devoted to standard Athletic Trainer illness and injury recognition and treatment protocols and students will be expected to participate in clinical and shadowing opportunities. ELA research and writing skills will be emphasized and tailored to individual student interests on such topics as sports specific overuse injuries; joint disorders of the aging athlete; chronic traumatic encephalopathy; and frontiers of spinal cord injury treatment. This course is highly recommended for students interested in pursuing careers in athletic training physical therapy, sports medicine or chiropractic medicine. Concurrent enrollment is acceptable.

 

Health Science IV

8085-8086 Health Science IV Grade 12 1 credit
Prerequisites: Medical Science I, Human Body Systems or Anatomy and Physiology (see p. 22). This course will provide students with professional learning experience in the five career pathways: Diagnostic, Therapeutic, Support Services, Health Informatics, Bio-Medical. Goals are typically set cooperatively by the student, parents, teachers and employers. This course will include classroom activities, involving research of the various careers in the health profession and one rotation within each of the five pathways for the Health Science Education cluster. The rotational clinical/shadowing professional learning experience for students may occur in a variety of settings. All students may earn C.N.A. certification during the fall semester, which is the CNA course offered through Hutchinson Community College.

 

Medical Terminology

Medical Terminology is offered online through Hutchinson Community College. It is a dual college credit course and can be taken as an independent study.

 

Emergency Medical Technician

80901-80902 Emergency Medical Technician (HCC) Grade 12 1 credit
Prerequisites: Principal approval, appropriate reading placement score, Human Body Systems or Anatomy and Physiology (see p. 22). Information, skills and attitudes necessary for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the State of Kansas and National Registry of EMT. Includes EM131 Cardiac Care for .5 credit ( HCC course): Cardiac function, disease and treatment modalities for various cardiac emergencies; basic anatomy and physiology; cardiac disease and the risk factors involved in cardiovascular degeneration; sudden cardiac death and the probable causes along with treatment modalities. This course will meet at the Newton Medical Center. Students are responsible for costs of board fees and books with the POSSIBLITY of partial reimbursement upon certification. A uniform of black pants, black shoes and t-shirt will be required. T-shirt is provided. 10 credit hours – HCC. Hutchinson Community College course number is EM110.
