All classes will be held in the Orchestra Room (4-131) at Newton High School. Beginning Strings and Instrument Switching 1 June-26 June Learn to play the violin, viola, cello, or bass. This class is for students who have never played a stringed instrument before or who would like to try a new instrument and is open to all incoming Santa Fe 5th and 6th grade students. Students will begin learning the basics of how to play the instrument, how to care for it, and how to read music. Students will need an instrument, supplies, and the Essential Elements 2000 Book 1. Violin and Viola sessions will be held Monday-Friday from 11:30-12:15. Cello and Bass sessions will be held Monday-Friday from 12:30-1:15. Two-Week Intensive Sessions Session 1 (1 June-12 June) 5/6 Orchestra (8:30-10:00 Daily) This class is a performance group for students who have just completed 5th or 6th grade orchestra at Santa Fe. The Teen Librarian (Maggie) will surprise you with activities like: board games, crafts, playing the Nintendo Switch on the projector screen, and movies! Water and snacks will be provided. Teens (ages 10-18) are welcome to come and go as they please. June 3rd activity: "DINO SIZE." Teens will go outside and, under the shaded patio of the library, will use chalk to guess, then draw the ACTUAL size of dinosaurs. We'll compare how big dinosaurs are to our current height, how fun? Afterwards, teens can play the Nintendo Switch on a large projector screen. Snacks included!  During the summer, this event will be hosted from every Wednesday in June from 2:30 - 4:30 PM. In July, we're hosting a teen Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) club!

STEM with coding, programming, and robotics! We will learn and work with programming and coding to complete various courses and tasks with Dash. Dash is a quirky little robot with many surprising talents. We will have several Dash Robots along with tablets for youth to work in pairs to compete against other teams to complete challenges. The Dash Robots program will be led by Marcia Oden, Harvey County 4-H Program Assistant. This is NPL's & K-State Extension - Harvey County first ever Dash Robots Camp! Join us for a three-day workshop where teens will build upon their skills and complete challenges. Each session is an hour long. Ages 10-18. Registration required via NPL and the K-State Extension Harvey County (link below). Participants are required to register for each event. Spots are limited. July Anime & Manga Club at NPL

Teens (ages 10-18) are invited to NPL's Anime & Manga Club on Saturday, July 18th at 10AM. We will read and discuss Haikyu!!, a manga about volleyball. "With dramatic angles, typical manga-style artwork depicts scenes of thrilling action. This fast-paced, exciting manga is a story of sportsmanship, perseverance, and, above all, belief in oneself. Weights (50 minutes) (Ages 12 and up): Weights class is designed to teach participants proper and safe lifting techniques and weight room safety/etiquette. Participants can expect to lift weights appropriate for their age, learn about a variety of equipment and proper use, and engage in workouts. Weight classes maintain a 1:8 ratio with a single instructor supervising and instructing less than 8 participants at a time. Due to the smaller class sizes participants get one-on-one attention and learn how to function in a weight room setting safely for their age.

LotusCheerCamp--JUNE (PDF)

Energize and Refresh. Camp is designed with cheerleaders in mind. Bring your team to the next level by training with our experienced staff. Camp consists of motion and chant work, tumbling, stunt development and group communication, conditioning drills, spirit/crowd involvement, and team bonding exercises. This is a suitable option for teams or individuals wishing to gain more cheer experience. Participants will be divided by grade level and taught age-appropriate skills. This is a 4-hour camp and participants should be able to handle the camp duration. Suitable for ages 2nd grade and up. All instructors are USA Cheer certified, experienced, and First Aid/CPR certified and trained

LotusGymnasticsCamp--JUNE (PDF)

Refine. Strengthen. Elevate. Camp specifically focuses on gymnastics and tumbling development. Let your budding gymnast work towards their goals in a fun, energetic, and skill building environment. Camp includes a 20-minute dynamic warm-up complete with tumbling and shaping drills, 45-minute tumbling training, 15-minute snack break, 45-minute event training (bars, beam, or vault), 30-minute conditioning and fundamentals, a 15-minute group challenge, and a 15-minute cool down and confidence reflection session. Enrolled gymnasts will be divided by skill level. Ages 5 and up can enroll. All Instructors are USAG Certified, experienced, and CPR/First Aid certified and trained

Teens (ages 10-18) are encouraged to sign up for Newton Public Library's Summer Reading challenge. Log your minutes and earn prizes! The goal? Read 800 minutes between June 1st - July 25th. But guess what... you get a prize for every 100 minutes you read. There's also a pizza party for teens who read 800 minutes and a bunch of bigger prizes you could win. Attending teen events gets you extra opportunities to win the BIG prizes. Please be sure to check out all of our fun events planned for teens this summer at NPL! :)
